Meet the tribe from Rajasthan that has defied this stringent tradition,

The indigenous Garasia tribe from Rajasthan has been practicing a different tradition from thousands of years. According to social scientists who have been studying the tribal practices, the Garasia people’s livelihood depends on farming and labour. Couples live-in together and only marry their partners when they have a fair amount of money.

Yet money happens to come at a much later point in their lives. Until then, they continue to live together and have children out of wedlock, minus the societal ostracisation.



Another unusual practice in the Garasia community is letting their teenaged children befriend partners of their choice at a two-day 'courtship fair' held in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Reportedly, they then "elope" and return to live together, without necessarily having to marrying each other.



It is also a bit of a rare occurrence in rural India, where teenaged boys and girls have the freedom to choose her partner.

गरासिया समाज में दाम्पत्य की अनोखी परंपरा है, जो करीब-करीब लिव इन की तरह ही है। आम भारतीय समाज में अभी भी इस तरह की परंपरा को स्वीकार नहीं किया गया है। इस मायने में ये आदिवासी समाज बिल्कुल अलग और कई सौ साल आगे दिखाई देता है। गरासिया समाज में पहले दाम्पत्य की शुरुआत हो जाती है। समाज के पंचायत की 'दापा प्रथा' यानी युवक-युवती के सहमत होने पर लड़की पक्ष को सामाजिक सहमति से कुछ राशि दे दी जाती है। इसके बाद लड़के-लड़कियां बिना शादी के पति-पत्नी की तरह साथ रहने लगते हैं। हालांकि, बच्चे पैदा होने के बाद वे अपनी सहूलियत से कभी भी शादी कर सकते हैं।



इस परम्परा की शूरुआत कुछ इस तरह हुई..

सालों पहले गरासिया समाज के चार भाई कहीं जाकर बस गए थे। तीन ने शादी की और एक बिना शादी (लिव इन रिलेशन) के रहने लगा। संयोग से शादीशुदा भाइयों को कोई औलाद नहीं हुई। सिर्फ चौथे भाई की वजह से वंश और परिवार चला। कहते हैं कि इसी के बाद, गरासिया समाज की पीढ़ियों से यह धारणा चली आ रही है।



इस परम्परा की एक खास बात..

यदि दोनों के लिव-इन में रहने के बावजूद भी बच्चे नहीं हुए तो वे अलग-अलग हो जाते हैं। फिर किसी और के साथ लिव-इन में रह बच्चे पैदा करने की कोशिश करते हैं।
